N. T. Wright on Colbert Report Thursday

Attention! Put down your beers, your weapons, your systematic theology texts, and most especially your Left Behind books, and find out the channel and broadcast time for the Colbert Report on Thursday, June 19.

The world’s greatest theologian, N. T. Wright (he of the ‘what REALLY happens after we die?’ brilliance) will be the guest.

No, this is not a joke. The Bishop of Durham and author of more theology than I can keep up with will be on Colbert. I am giddy with anticipation.

Who I’d read if I had 2 years to devote to it

I was thinking today, as I sat down to do some book summary papers for my next class in the doctoral program, about all the books that are piling up that I want to read but are not on the list for my upcoming classes. There are a lot of onesy books that are building up - but also, there are authors that I really want to dive deep into.

I’d love to read the entire catalog of works by these authors:

Thomas Merton
N. T. Wright
Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Elizabeth O’Connor (I’ve read all but, I think, 2 of her books, but need to re-read them all)
Kathleen Norris

Seems to me that I’m missing somebody. But it’s not coming to me right now. I used to want to read all of Eugene Peterson’s stuff, but I find it hard to finish his books these days.

Who would you like to read everything by?

Introduction

Welcome! I'm Pat Loughery, and I'll be your host here. Feel free comment on what you see here. I am a lay missionary to North Bend on the east side of Seattle, a husband, dad to 2 kids, a software test manager for Equiom, Inc.,, a software consulting company. I'm also a failed and (quite possibly future) church planter and a Doctor of Ministry student with Bakke Graduate University, and usually on this blog we discuss Christian spirituality (especially of the Celtic, post-Evangelical, post-Charismatic and neo-monastic flavors), photography, motorcycles, and other oddball things.

About the Coracle

I'm trying to live a deep and relational Christian life. As I study Christian spirituality, I find the Celtic stream helpful, challenging and liveable. One of the images from early Celtic Christianity is their sea transport - the coracle.

The ancient Celts traveled in coracles - handmade, wooden framed and hide-covered boats, to journey where the trinitarian God led them. Though the transportation was simple, the journey was profound. This image is an illustration of the way I experience God's guidance - an invitation to travel with him on his paths, not mine; at his pace, not mine.
