I was struck by Vanier's awareness that we tend to relate to others through our minds, rather than through our emotions. He was aware of this long before Goleman, and far more profoundly.

Yes Pat

With so much mass produced plastic religion around the search for authentic contact with the Divine is to be found in an ever growing multitude of disillusioned believers.

Blessings

Hi Pat

Good luck with your new site!

I think we've got similar tastes in our spirituality. Have a wee look at my blog or book 'The Prodigal Prophet'

This is such a lovely article. Hence to be a christian leader calls for one to understand and sure of the one he is pointing people to.

Yeah, it's a mystery to me too, April. I think for many people, having the EXACTLY right belief structure is the most important thing, and the self-justification that comes from that is a powerful drug.

Thankfully, I do think that most people realize that that particular community is an outlier and doesn't represent Christianity, but there are so many other groups, closer to "normal", whose influence is hurtful.

Agree totally! Just read this morning about the Westboro Baptist Church (the same folks who picket the funerals of slain soldiers) planning to picket the little nine-year-old girl's funeral and I can't imagine the sordid message that is sending out to the world. There is only one vaccine for hatred---love. Since the Bible is filled up with that message, why is that many Christians don't get that?

We often read in the bible "pray without ceasing" and isn't that really what the monastic life encourages us to do? I think God knows that we human beings are always wavering between being in touch with God and out of touch with God. Maybe the thing that brings us closer to God is a discipline of awareness of His voice in our lives.
