A while back, I posted a blog entry about the authors that I would love to commit to reading all of their work (or at least a large majority of it).
Then, I said this:
I was thinking today, as I sat down to do some book summary papers for my next class in the doctoral program, about all the books that are piling up that I want to read but are not on the list for my upcoming classes. There are a lot of onesy books that are building up – but also, there are authors that I really want to dive deep into.
I’d love to read the entire catalog of works by these authors:
- Thomas Merton
- N. T. Wright
- Dietrich Bonhoeffer
- Elizabeth O’Connor (I’ve read all but, I think, 2 of her books, but need to re-read them all)
- Kathleen Norris
Seems to me that I’m missing somebody. But it’s not coming to me right now. I used to want to read all of Eugene Peterson‘s stuff, but I find it hard to finish his books these days.
Nowadays, I think I’d leave those people on the list; I’d also add these:
- Esther de Waal writes on Benedictine and Celtic spirituality
- Henri Nouwen
- Jean Vanier
How about you? Which authors would you like to dig deeply into?
I would start with Henri Nouwen–I've loved his stuff. Can't beat a guy who left the Ivy Leagues for a special needs community.
Yeah, I love that about Nouwen. His book on leadership, In the Name of Jesus, should be required reading for all Christian leaders, especially pastors.
