When I First Began to Love God

When I first began to love God

I thought I’d fallen in the ocean

But I was only on the beach
then I entered the water
and was thrown back on shore

And then washed again into the waves

God, why did I want this love?
And what is this back-and-forth?

— Hafiz, a 15th century Sufi poet

One Response to When I First Began to Love God

  1. And the sea pulled back its waves
    And left the banks deserted
And the pearls cracking ‘neath the sun

    But inevitable as it is…
The sea will cast forth its watery waves
And make of the sand the abode of colours
And each perfect tree will let down its fruits
And raise its branches to share with the breeze the news

And you know well where the breeze blows

    All around the worlds
