The New Monasticism

I’m going to post, in its entirety, a post from Kedge’s blog today, on monasticism.

“The restoration of the church will surely come from a new kind of monasticism, which will have nothing in common with the old but a life of uncompromising adherence to the Sermon on the Mount in imitation of Christ. I believe the time has come to rally people together for this.”
- Dietrich Bonhoeffer

?The kind of induction I?m thinking about would be essentially a short term monastic experience. Of course the beautiful thing about Jesus with his disciples is that they had a three year monastic and missional experience combined. It was monastic because they would hang out with Jesus, get away from the crowds, have a way of life they developed together, and get to observe Jesus. But it was missional because they got to work with him ? healing, feeding, teaching. That?s the kind of model which we ought to be trying to emulate?
- Brian McClaren (Cutting Edge, Winter 2002)

I am really impacted by this. I don’t see myself in a monastic role (though some of my friends, like Rachelle, certainly do). But certainly the idea of full-time dedication to Kingdom is what I’m doing with my life, and calling those in my church to. This one is worth praying through.
