SiCKO made this point really, really well for me.

A friend of a friend said his method of getting medical care is to give a false name at the ER. Not sure if that really works, but it points to the desperate need for a better system in this country.

Paul, I hear ya. It's a crazy situation. I have one friend who lives very simply an intentionally, with no debt - except for a $60k hospital bill for birthing a baby in the hospital. That's wrong on SO many levels.

Although we are long past the twenty-somethings referenced in the NYT article, we have been without any insurance for over 4 years now. Because of my myriad medical problems and conditions, this has been a major problem.

I've just had to learn how to ignore a lot of stuff and do without the meds I should be taking. Just for my 'maintenance' meds, the pharmacy bill was well over $600/month, way beyond what we could afford.

I am sure a couple of new problems have appeared since I last went to the Dr, but again, we just ignore and press forward. The one time when my heart got the best of me and I had to be taken to the hospital (amazing how quick they get you sent home once they realize there is no insurance), well, let's just say we'll be paying for that visit for the rest of our lives.

No easy answers either. If I didn't have hope in God and the perspective of the present in light of eternity, I'd probably go nuts.
